Taking Home The Gold @ Legacy Cheer Nationals

Saturday, 11 July 2015

A few weekends ago I attended the Legacy 'Live Your Legacy' Cheer and Dance National Championships at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and WE TOOK HOME THE GOLD BABY!

I competed with my two teams Glimmer and Wildfire and we put out two of our best performances of the season. Glimmer smashed it! I honestly don't think I've ever seen us perform our routine that well and Wildfire had a few hiccups but still took home a national champion title. Glimmer took second but I'm refusing to acknowledge that and in my eyes we won. I'm really not one to question the judges decisions or complain about placements but this is an exception. I truly believe we deserved to score higher but part of the beauty of cheer is that you never know what's going to happen on the day. It all comes down to what the judges decide and on this day they didn't decide on us.

If there's one thing I learnt from this competition its that at the end of the day it ALL comes back to the scoresheet. You've got to hit each part of the scoresheet hard and the tiniest changes to the skills you put in your performance can up your points in the same way that the tiniest mistakes can result in deductions to your score. Sass unfortunately isn't a category you're judged on (if it was we would have won before we even stepped on the stage lol) and you can perform the hell out of a routine but if another team comes along and hits those elements of the scoresheet in a slightly different way then they can take the crown. It doesn't matter about the size of the team, the sass level or even the uniform, it's just about hitting those elements and ticking off the checklist that the judges score by. A hard lesson to learn but we are already making the changes we need to make to show the judges that Glimmer are the team to beat!

Right now the pressure is on for Wildfire. FC Internationals is our big end of season comp and the one that most of us consider to be the big one, the one that truly decides who can call themselves the best of the best. Having won legacy we've set the bar high and are going to be seen as the team to beat. Getting to the top is the easy bit, it's staying there that's hard but I believe in my Wildfire family and know we will do everything in our power to take home that trophy!

As a program Sparks took home 5 1st place National Champion titles, 2 2nd places, 1 4th, 1 7th and we plan on taking even more at FC in a few weeks time!

Until next time, Jaydee xx
